The Ten Foundations of kung fu:

  • - Spirit
  • - Relaxation
  • - Speed
  • - Power
  • - Skills/techniques
  • - Grounding
  • - Centre
  • - Distance
  • - Timing
  • - Breathing

Six Criteria for standing:

  • - Relaxtion
  • - Cultivation of intrinsic energy
  • - Efficient breathing
  • - Opening the energy gates
  • - Physical strength and stamina
  • - Grounding

The higher reasons for standing are as follows. To achieve mind and body unity through meditation. To train 'Mind Set' essential for kung fu. To achieve correct posture and get rid of 'bad habits'. In other words, to change, even to heal, improve and strengthen the mind, body and character.

The Six Harmonies:

  • - Hands and feet
  • - Elbows and knees
  • - Hips and shoulders
  • - Mind and intent
  • - Intent and chi
  • - Chi and power

Knees must be bent, feet flat on the floor, shoulder width apart, 50/50. The back must be naturally straight.

Attack!

  • - The position and hold must be firm enough to support the weapon.
  • - The weapon must point naturally at the target without any physical effort.
  • - Visual alignment must be correct.
  • - The strike must be released and followed through without disturbing the position.



Essential exercises to be practised throughout the syllabus, but not graded:

  • - Slow walking
  • - Slow kicking
  • - Trial of strength – push and pull back
  • - Chi Sau:
  • ~ Redirecting forces in a natural way (playing)
  • ~ Attacking when contact is broken (gap)
  • ~ Taking turns to “win” – various methods
  • ~ Spontaneous movement with constant, total body jing

Exercises to be practised less often:

  • - Slow walking pushing a partner
  • - Slow kicking with eyes closed
  • - Trial of strength – rising and falling
  • - Instant reaction exercise
  • - Sticking feet

Occasional exercises:

  • - Hand speed work
  • - Fast kicking
  • - Dodging
  • - Hitting pads
  • - Pushing hands – Tai Chi method
  • - Pushing hands – mind exercise
  • - Circular kick defence
  • - Chi Sau – very close range

Qualities to be emphasised throughout the entire syllabus:

  • - Grounding, plus sinking
  • - Natural movement
  • - Poise
  • - Balance
  • - Use of springy forces
  • - Relaxation
  • - Centering the mind and body
  • - Calmness (goes with relaxation)
  • - Extreme awareness
  • - Ferocity
  • - Not wasting strength on casual movement
  • - Control
